A teenage girl is missing. Is your daughter involved, or is she next?

Your daughter is in danger. But can you trust her?

When Karen Finch's 17-year-old daughter, Sophie, arrives home after a night out drunk and accompanied by police officers, no one is smiling the morning after. But Sophie remembers nothing about how she got into such a state.

Twelve hours later Sophie's friend Amy has still not returned home. Then the body of a young woman is found.

Karen is sure that Sophie knows more than she is letting on. But Karen has her own demons to fight. She struggles to go beyond her own door without a panic attack.

As she becomes convinced that Sophie is not only involved but also in danger, Karen must confront her own anxieties to stop whoever killed one young girl moving on to another - Sophie.

A taut psychological thriller, perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train and I Let You Go.

I was actually really looking forward to reading this book. It sounded like exactly the kind of story I love, a "gripping psychological thriller" (although I do hate it when they put it in the title) but unfortunately in this instance it failed to deliver for me.
So the book blurb intrigued me and the social media buzz about it was considerable, but it wasn't far into the story that the problems become apparent. First, most of the dialogue doesn't ring true, and characters ask themselves dozens upon dozens upon dozens of introspective questions, which was a very odd technique employed by the author and slowed the book down in my opinion.
That being said the premise of this book is a good one. Your daughter is brought home one night by the police and she can’t remember anything that happened the night before past a certain point. The police had found her wandering around an area not usually frequented by her or her friends and mumbling incoherently. One of Sophie’s friends is missing and she isn’t being very helpful to her parents or the police. Does she know what happened? Is she hiding something from her parents?, the police?
This is the story of a mother and daughter who basically make all of the wrong choices right from the beginning of this incident. Sophie’s mother, Karen, is basically home bound after suffering an attack herself some time in the past. She is an emotional wreck and doesn’t know how to deal with her daughter or her husband for that matter. You would think that between the mother, father and daughter one of them would come to the conclusion that calling the police is the right thing to do, but that isn’t the case.
I’m starting to think that maybe I’ve just read way too many really well executed psychological thrillers so it’s rare that I’m truly gripped and horrified. While there were certain aspects of Saving Sophie that I liked, I had just as many overall issues. I will say that I would be interested in seeing what Sam Carrington writes next and that I can definitely see the appeal for some people. For me it's probably a 2.5 stars but I'll give it 3 stars as it's a debut and I love supporting authors.

SPOILER. Do not read if you have not finished the book!

The author kept my interest, even riveted attention throughout the book. There were some distractions of less than believable thoughts and actions. But none of these distractions dimmed my interest in the story. But I am generous by giving two stars because of the ending. It was maddening to have the characters come to what the author brought them to. I would never had spent the time reading this book if I had an inkling of the way the author ended. I will never read this author again because I feel I can't trust this author to end a story in a reasonable way.
Am I the only one with a million questions after reading this book??

This is basically a good book, but there are a few problems with it. Of course, as many other reviewers have mentioned, none of the main characters are sympathetic, and their decisions are insane. But I can certainly get past that, it wouldn't be a psychological thriller without terrible decisions and dysfunctional people.

My biggest problem with this is there are so many plot holes. The author would mention something about the crime that caused Karen's agoraphobia, and so you think it will be explained later. It's mentioned a bunch of times, and there's something about it being someone she knew, but didn't tell the police because she was embarrassed, but it never really explains it - and it obviously is important because of the agoraphobia and all of the resulting decisions she has made over the last two years.

And then, there's the ending (SPOILER ALERT).
I almost threw my iPad across the room, I was so frustrated. Did the ending have to be so vague? They almost could have stopped on the second to last chapter. That last chapter with the police talking to each other left me with so many questions. When DI Wade says "he's going down for this", who is she referring to - Mike? That's what it sounds like, but why would she say that - it was clearly self defense. And at one point Jay flat-out said that he murdered Erin to do someone else a favor - someone suggested earlier that her stepmom might have been behind it. But in the last chapter, the police said that the stepmom acted nervous because of an abusive ex - so who did Jay kill Erin for???

All in all, the writing wasn't bad, and it had a good twist - I think it just got too convoluted and the writer lost track of all of the pieces of the puzzle.
I've read many a thriller and this one was more disappointing than gripping. The plot did have many a twist and a turn, but it felt contrived rather than artful and truly suspenseful. The characters were one-dimensional, although I did appreciate the creative changes in narrator and point of view to introduce the main twist.
This convoluted plot is filled with the most dysfunctional characters who, faced with common sense, always choose complete stupidity. The key description for this book is "Depressing". An agoraphobic mother with a daughter whose best friend is murdered tries to "protect" her daughter from a murderer by doing what? Lying to the police? Lying to her husband? Are all English family dynamics this wretched? The unsatisfying ending leaves you with so many questions. The main one being "Did the author lose her pen and just give up on the ending and walk away?" This book is soul-less. Walk away from it.
